Chapter 6

Early the next morning, Fiona paced her living room, which required exactly four steps in each direction. Movement seemed to help settle her nerves. The nervous energy felt an awful lot like fear, and she hated that. Then again, it was Halloween, a day designed for fear. She couldn’t help wondering what the killer would have in mind for her today. Had he already claimed another victim?

Greg had been a perfect gentleman, sleeping on the couch, though it didn’t exactly fit his tall frame. He’d been so exhausted that he’d crashed shortly after dinner. It made her feel safe to have him there, looking out for her. And after he’d opened up to her a little, she’d felt closer to him.

Still, she hated needing anyone, even the sexy detective. Most of all, she hated that she wanted him. She wasn’t about to invite him into her bed when she wasn’t sure what kind of response she’d get. Open herself up to rejection again? No, thank you. He’d have to make the next move. Unfortunately, she wasn’t the patient type and a methodical man like Greg moved slowly, cautiously. Then again, he’d stroked her cheek to wake her this morning. She’d been ordered not to leave her apartment until he returned from his errand, even to go downstairs to her workroom or the gallery. And so, she paced. Did the man not understand how much work she had to do for tonight’s event?

Glancing out the window, she spied the car of the off-duty friend Greg had mentioned. The officer was standing guard while Greg was gone.

A knock on her door made her jump. Greg had her key, so who was knocking? Tentatively, she moved to the door and looked through the peephole. The face of her handsome, sexy detective was outlined there. She hurried to open the door and had to restrain herself from jumping on him like an eager puppy.

“Did you forget your key?” she asked.

“Your key, and I didn’t want to assume I should use it again. Besides, I figured you’d be awake by the time I got back and might be dressing or something.” A slight flush reddened his cheeks. “Any contact from the killer?”

Instinctively, her hand went to her pocket, where her phone was silent. “No. If he had, I would have contacted you right away, as per your instructions.”

“I appreciate you following the safety protocol, both on that and on staying here while I was gone.”

“Better safe than sorry, but now that you’re back, I have a show to put on.” She was about to push past him and head down the stairs to the gallery when he took her hand.

“Relax. Alyssa just arrived and I’ve got reinforcements coming.”

“Reinforcements?”

“Vanessa—”

She planted her hands on her hips. “Tell me you did not bother a woman who’s expected to give birth at any moment and is supposed to be taking it easy.” The thought of her partner toddling down here to set up dozens of pieces of art—many of them heavy or awkward to lift—horrified her.
